What Is PMI?
-
PMI
stands for the Project Management Institute; its motto is building
professionalism through project management. Established in 1969, and
headquartered outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the PMI is the world’s
leading not-for-profit project management association, with over 125,000
members worldwide.
There are PMI chapters in 140 Countries from Barbados to Kazakhstan, and
in 40 states, including the District of Columbia.
What is the benefit of joining the PMI Honolulu Chapter?
-
The Honolulu chapter supports the national
charter of the PMI, which includes focus areas of: education and
training, research, formal networking opportunities. Here in
Honolulu we have a formal support program to achieve the PMP
certification. The monthly meetings provide an opportunity for
industry leaders to present current topics, and members and guests stay
apprised of “hot topics” within project management. The meetings and
professional development events, such as the annual Professional
Development Day, offer members great opportunities to build a colleague
network of local project managers.
What is the value of becoming PMP certified?
-
The Project Management Professional (PMP)
certification is the world’s most recognized professional credential for
individuals associated with project management. The PMP designation also
tells employers that you have a solid foundation of project management
knowledge. More often, prospective employers and clients require
certification for project managers.
In Tom Mochal’s
article “Weighing the Value of a PMP” written in May 2004, and posted on
C/Net Asia, he indicated that recognition of the PMP certificate is
rising.
“Two
years ago, when I was again evaluating the job market, I noticed a
sizable number of openings that were requesting or requiring the PMP
credentials. Although the majority of companies still didn’t require
the PMP, a sizable number did.
“
Where can I go to get additional information on the PMI
Honolulu Chapter and upcoming events?
-
There are two main ways to get information on
the Honolulu Chapter’s activities. The first one is the chapter’s
website -
http://www.pmi-honoluluchapter.org. This is the easiest place
to find information on the events, PMP training and to learn about us
through the newsletter, which is archived on the site. This
website is well tended and updates are extremely current. Our web master
frequently posts information regarding upcoming chapter events.
After each meeting, when the presentations are available, they too will
be posted.
What’s the other way? Come to our monthly meeting and let’s get
acquainted.
